Avakas Gorge access: current closure and what to do instead

PLAN AROUND THE CURRENT ACCESS

Is Avakas Gorge open? Closure advice and alternatives from Paphos

← All local guides

Avakas Gorge was still listed as temporarily closed at our 1 November 2026 review. Do not enter the gorge during the closure. For an outdoor day in this part of the district, use the Peyia coast instead; Kathikas provides a separate village-and-food outing.

The closure is the deciding fact

The official nature-trail listing marks Avakas Gorge as temporarily closed. A Forestry Department notice from May 2026 reiterates the closure and dangerous conditions. We found no official reopening confirmation in the 1 November review.

That is why this page does not provide directions for a walk into the gorge. An open approach road, cars at the entrance or visitors passing a barrier do not override the closure. The official status link at the end of the guide is the appropriate place to look for a change.

Sunshine does not remove the reported hazards

The closure notice describes water, slippery ground and falling material. Conditions at the entrance do not reveal those throughout the gorge, and a dry morning on the coast does not establish that the trail is safe to enter.

If a reserved tour still mentions Avakas, ask the organiser which permitted alternative it will use. Better shoes or a slower pace are not substitutes for respecting an official closure.

For coastal scenery: Edro III and Agios Georgios

A shore-side view of the Edro III area and time at Agios Georgios harbour provide a different outdoor day near Peyia. These are independent coastal visits, not alternative ways into the gorge.

Use stable, permitted viewpoints and allow time for a meal rather than replacing the walk with cliff scrambling. Wind and sea conditions still matter. For a party mainly interested in scenery, a shorter coastal outing may also be a better fit than a demanding hike.

For a village and lunch: Kathikas

Kathikas offers village time and food inland from the coast. It is a separate road journey, not an attraction beside the trail entrance, so give it enough time to be the main outing.

Without a car, arrange a return taxi or use an organised trip whose itinerary includes the places you want. A coastal bus journey does not automatically solve transport from an inland village. If poor weather prompted the change, assess the inland journey as well rather than assuming it escapes the conditions.

Before returning after a reopening

An official reopening would be the first requirement. The permitted route, any remaining restrictions and current trail conditions would then determine whether the walk suits your party. Reopening alone would not establish step-free access or an easy outing for young children.

Vehicle access is a separate issue: a navigation route does not establish road suitability or permission under a hire agreement. Until the access status changes, there is little value in planning the gorge journey in detail. Use the alternatives above and revisit the official notice before a future trip.
