Akamas walks from Paphos: choose the right trail and starting point

← All local guides

For a shorter Akamas outing, compare the short Smigies circuit. Choose Aphrodite or Adonis only when the whole group wants a demanding walk, with transport and time for the return already arranged.

Four routes, different commitments

The current tourism trail map lists Aphrodite and Adonis as 7.5 km circuits, around 3½ hours and difficulty 3. Smigies offers a 2.5 km short circuit, around an hour, or a 6 km longer route, around two hours; both are graded 2. Pissouromoutti is 3 km, around two hours and grade 2.

These are planning estimates, not a pace you must maintain. Stops, terrain and your group can extend the day. A shorter distance does not automatically mean a flat or accessible path. If you want a casual outing, choose it deliberately rather than starting the longer route and hoping it becomes easier.

Choose your starting point before choosing the hotel

Aphrodite and Adonis are associated with the Baths of Aphrodite area on the north coast. Smigies and Pissouromoutti begin at Smigies picnic site above Neo Chorio. Those are different starts: a transfer to the Baths does not deliver you to every Akamas trail.

Latchi and the Neo Chorio coast are more natural accommodation bases for repeated outings here than central Paphos. From a city hotel, allow for the district crossing in both directions. Arrange the return before setting out, particularly if you are using a taxi rather than leaving your own vehicle at the start.

Choose spring or late autumn for a walking-led holiday

Spring and late autumn are the recommended walking seasons in the local tourism guidance. Even then, use the forecast and current trail notices when deciding the day. A seasonal recommendation cannot establish whether a particular path is open or suitable after bad weather.

Carry your own drinking water, wear footwear with grip and keep sufficient daylight for the return. The Adonis information identifies a non-potable fountain; a water feature on a map is not a reliable drinking-water supply. Download the route before leaving, and do not use a promotional photograph as navigation.

A walking day that leaves time to enjoy the coast

For a compact outing, make the short Smigies circuit the main activity and allow an unhurried meal afterwards. For Aphrodite or Adonis, protect the walking time: skip the extra attraction on the drive out and leave the evening free of tight reservations.

Adonis includes a road section on its return. That is one reason to read the actual route description rather than treating the circular label as a promise of uninterrupted footpath. If you are travelling with someone whose comfort on rough ground is uncertain, choose a gentler plan from the outset.

A guide or another kind of Akamas day?

A guided outing can make sense when you want help with navigation and interpreting the landscape. Ask for the named route, walking distance, difficulty and transport arrangement; a jeep safari through Akamas is a different product from a guided hike.

If the main attraction is the coastline rather than walking, compare a Latchi boat departure instead. Keep that choice honest: a boat trip gives you a day on the water, while a trail gives you a land-based view earned through the walk. Neither needs to be sold as a substitute for the other.
