Paphos Carnival and Green Monday: dates, picnics and planning

← All local guides

Carnival celebrations and Green Monday bring a different rhythm to a Paphos visit before Orthodox Easter. Green Monday is 15 March in 2027; the town’s parade and event times need a separate confirmed programme.

Carnival and Green Monday are different days out

Carnival is associated with the period before Lent; Green Monday marks its beginning and is linked with outdoor meals. For a visitor, that can mean choosing between a lively town event and a simpler day outside. There is no need to make both part of the trip if only one appeals to your group.

A parade has a route and a viewing time. A picnic needs a suitable place, food and a way home. Start with that difference instead of treating the whole period as one festival with a single location. Build the rest of the stay around the days you actually want.

How to check the Paphos Carnival programme

Paphos Municipality published a main parade and other family activities for its 2026 Carnival. That confirms a local programme exists, but last year’s dates and streets should not be reused for 2027. The 2027 parade date and route are still awaiting confirmation here.

When details are available, check the date, start and finish points, viewing access and any registration requirements. An event in the upper town is not automatically a harbour event. If you are choosing a hotel specifically for Carnival, wait for the location information or retain flexibility in your booking.

Green Monday: make the picnic the plan

Green Monday marks the start of Lent and is traditionally a day for picnics, with foods such as bread, vegetables and olives. You can keep the visitor version simple: buy food you enjoy, choose a suitable public place and leave enough time to sit rather than turning it into a driving circuit.

Use a designated picnic area or a place where eating is permitted, take your rubbish away and follow local restrictions. Do not assume a scenic beach photograph identifies a convenient picnic spot with toilets, shade or parking. Choose facilities that suit your group and have an indoor alternative if the day is wet.

Food choices: ask about the actual ingredients

A Lenten description does not settle every dietary question. Ask the bakery or restaurant what is in the dish if you need to avoid dairy, eggs, sesame or other ingredients. For a picnic, buy portions that are easy to carry and leave the elaborate meal for a table.

You can also make the day a relaxed restaurant outing if cooking and carrying supplies would add work. Reserve where necessary and confirm holiday opening. The point is an enjoyable day together, not reproducing a particular tradition perfectly.

Transport and choosing a base

For a parade, allow extra time for access and agree a pickup point away from any confirmed road closures. For Green Monday, check the bus operator’s holiday notice and your return service. A normal Monday timetable may be the wrong one for the date.

A central stay can help with a town-based plan, while a coastal resort may work better for hotel time and a separate event outing. Compare the repeated journeys rather than assuming every Paphos hotel is close to the same streets. Keep the exact venue saved once the programme is published.

Use the rest of the stay for ordinary Paphos days

Keep a harbour walk, an open-day archaeological visit or an Old Town meal available around the celebration. Those give you options if an event time changes or someone wants a quieter afternoon. You do not need a different prepaid activity for every spare slot.

If you want a countryside tour, choose it on its own merits and check the dated departure. Standard village tours are not Carnival packages and do not promise access to a parade or Green Monday gathering. Our comparison guides explain the routes and pickup arrangements so you can decide where an excursion fits.
