Staying near Tombs of the Kings: coast, archaeology and connections

← All local guides

The Tombs of the Kings area offers a base north of the harbour, with archaeology, coastal hotels and useful bus connections. The important distinction is between the ancient site, the avenue and the bus station: they are not one place.

A useful middle ground, with a main road to consider

Choose this area if archaeology and coastal hotel time appeal, but you also want to explore towards Chloraka, Kissonerga or Coral Bay. Elysium is one hotel in our shortlist here; the surrounding avenue has restaurant and transport options rather than the character of a secluded village.

The main road is part of the decision. Look at which side your hotel and favourite restaurants sit on, where the crossings are and how you reach the coast. A short line on the map can hide a much less convenient route on foot.

What the Tombs of the Kings actually are

The site is a rock-cut burial complex from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Its name refers to the scale of the monuments, rather than evidence that kings were buried here. Courtyards, columns and underground chambers make the architecture the main reason to visit.

It is distinct from the harbour-side archaeological park and its mosaics. See the two on separate visits if you want time to look properly, especially in warm weather. The official access guidance describes viewing from above for wheelchair users; underground chambers and uneven ground mean the whole experience is not step-free.

Build a half-day around one major stop

Our suggested plan is the tombs first, followed by a meal in the avenue area and a relaxed return to your hotel. Give yourself time to move between tomb complexes and pause outdoors. Do not book a meal so tightly that you have to hurry the visit.

For a fuller day, add a harbour outing later after a break. Trying to combine the tombs, mosaics, Old Town and Coral Bay in one day creates a sequence of transfers rather than a satisfying visit to any of them. Choose the second stop because it interests you, not because it is also labelled Paphos.

Food choices along the avenue and towards the mall

Karlina is a useful Cypriot and meze option opposite the archaeological area. Duomo offers Italian cooking further south, near the Elysium turning. Wagamama is at Kings Avenue Mall, with Japanese-inspired bowls and noodles if a shopping stop is already in the plan.

Those addresses are spread along the wider area. Save the restaurant you want and use its exact directions; a shared Tombs of the Kings category does not put all three at the site gates. For dinner, compare how far you want to travel after the meal as well as how easy it is to get there.

Use the station as a connection, not an attraction pin

OSYPA uses Tombs of the Kings station for several important services: the 615 north to Coral Bay, the 611 through the harbour towards the waterpark and the 612 airport service. The 618 links it with the upper-town transport network.

Check the operator’s stop map rather than navigating to the archaeological site when you mean the bus station. If arriving from the airport, the correct place to get off depends on your hotel, luggage and onward route. A terminal name is not a promise of a short walk to every hotel in the district.

Choose this base with the rest of the week in mind

If your ideal week alternates hotel time with archaeology, a Coral Bay outing and a countryside tour, this area is worth comparing. For the tour day, ask the operator whether collection is at the hotel or a nearby road stop, and keep the confirmation with your booking.

If your week is mainly harbour dining and short promenade outings, compare Kato Paphos too. If it is mainly sand and swimming, compare Coral Bay. Use our hotel maps to shortlist the location first, then compare rooms and prices for the dates you actually want.
